Joy Dare: He Knows ME

Beach

This morning, I read these words of Truth:

"O LORD, you have searched me and known me!
You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar."
(Psalm 139:1-2)

I was struck by this reminder that He not only created me and numbered my days, but that He also knows and cares about the little details of my life from my coming to my going, my sitting to my rising.

And, even more so, He knows my thoughts while they are still out of reach for me.  Matthew Henry puts it so beautifully when he explains, "Though my thoughts be ever so foreign and distant from one another, thou understandest the chain of them, and can make out their connexion, when so many of them slip my notice that I myself cannot".

A few weeks ago, a friend shared this verse with me, "You have kept count of my tossings; put my tears in your bottle. Are they not in your book?" (Psalm 56:8)

Today, as I continue to count His gifts, I am most thankful that I serve a Father who understands me more than anyone else on earth ever could.

Joy: Heart & Soul of Thankful Praise

In my morning devotions this morning, I read this quote in Matthew Henry's commentary of Philippians 1.

"As holy joy is the heart and soul of thankful praise,
so thankful praise is the lip and language of holy joy."

I was so convicted as I read this that in failing to continue counting 1000 gifts, I've failed to use that beautiful language of thankful praise.  And in failing to use that language, I've also failed to find that holy joy He promises in His word.

There's a reason Ann's book has created such a phenomenon.  We are called to a life of joy, but joy only comes when we lift our voices in praise of the One who has already blessed us with so many good gifts.

Sara started another beautiful movement of choosing joy.  And the way to choose joy is to focus on the blessings, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant.

Because when we focus on the blessings, giving thanks to the One who so graciously gives us all things, we can really count it all joy, no matter what our circumstances are.

Sara is a beautiful example of someone whose circumstances made it hard to choose joy, but she never let her circumstances define her.  She chose to count it all joy.

(To read more of Sara's story, check out her blog or sign up for this weekend's (in) real life by (in)courage to be blessed with a video retelling of her story.  I'm so looking forward to tuning in this weekend.)

Joy Dare: Week 4

Coast path

You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
(Psalm 16:11)

The quiet of last week was disrupted when my husband found out Tuesday afternoon he had to leave the next morning on a business trip for three days.  He had never gone on a business trip so far from home before and I immediately felt the panic start to rise.

It was fear that made me remember where I once was and how my husband helped me walk through that dark valley to find peace and contentment in Him.  And how would I manage for three whole days without him?

I know it might seem silly, but I didn't realize how much I depended on him until he had to leave.  I am so thankful my parents opened their home to us while he was gone...but, more importantly, for the fullness of joy He promises in His word, no matter what circumstances surround me.  He is the one who shows me the path to a life of freedom and hope and joy.

In Him alone is the fullness of joy and pleasures forevermore.

Joy Dare, Week 3

Love

Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good,
for His steadfast love endures forever.
~Psalm 136:1

As I opened up to my memory verse for the week, I smiled as I came across this beautiful repetitive phrase: His steadfast love endures forever.  It is repeated 26 times in this Psalm alone.

Other versions of this verse use the phrase "faithful love" and "lovingkindness", which both refer to the grace or favor of God that is constant and abiding.  I love those words - constant and abiding.  Not only is His love for me constant, it is abiding, living and active and present in me.

We praise Him and thank Him not only because He does good things for us, but because He is good.  In all things and at all times, He is good.  This is what the joy dare is about - giving thanks in all things, even when it's hard.

In every recording of His gifts, from one to 1000, we should take notice of His love that is constant and abiding and glory in Him alone.

Joy Dare, Week 2

Gift

"Every good and perfect gift is from above..." James 1:17

I was reading Gods and Kings by Lynn Austin last night.  I had to put the book down, because, although it was well written and a good read, it was too emotionally draining for me.  I could feel myself becoming depressed over the hopelessness of the story, especially knowing it is based on the real story of King Ahaz's reign over Israel.  But there was one part that really struck me.

Zechariah, the father of King Ahaz's wife, Abijah, begins to teach his grandson, Hezekiah, (who would one day be king) about the only true God, after Hezekiah witnesses the horrific death of his older brother, given as a sacrifice to the idol Molech by his own father.   Hezekiah questions him, "...how do you know that Yahweh is real if you can't see him?"( page 111).  Zechariah is speechless, because he doesn't have an answer.

During the night, he tosses and turns thinking about his grandson's question.  How could he tell his grandson Yahweh is real if he wasn't sure himself?  As his heart cries out to Yahweh, the answer is given to him as Yahweh gently speaks truth to his soul.
"Listen, son, last night you asked how we know that Yahweh is really there.  All we need to do is open our eyes and see all the marvelous things He has created.  The heavens declare His glory!"(page 114)
I completely forgot about my memory verse last week, but I opened up my planner to find it today.  (Better late than never, right?)  I couldn't help but think of Zechariah's response to Hezekiah as I read the verse from James 1:17.  All I have to do to know God is real is to look for the blessings, the daily gifts He has given me.  In counting my gifts, I am counting the ways I know that my God is the only real God there is.

Joy Dare, Week 1

If you haven't already discovered Ann's blog, you must check it out. Seriously.  It is a daily must read for me, because it is always, always a breath of fresh air. The way Ann's words can reach into the deepest places of my heart never ceases to amaze me.

This year, Ann has given a Joy Dare on her blog, a year of counting to 1000 gifts and truly living this life of eucharisteo.  After discovering my word for the year, I just couldn't say no to this Joy Dare.  This is not the first time this week that God has spoken words of joy to me, reaffirming the word He has given me for the year.

Sunday morning, Pastor had us open to James 1:2-12.  And the first verse...was the exact same verse God laid on my heart for this year.  That, my friends, is no coincidence.  As Katie Weldon would say, it's a God-thing.  And nothing short of amazing.

I'm keeping daily records of my 1000 gifts in this sweet notebook I purchased from Paper Coterie last year, but never finished counting to 1000.  I started over at number 1 and I already find myself thinking throughout my day, "I must write this down!"

I'm also recording my thanks on my Girl of Grace facebook page, but, every Monday, I'm going to join Ann's link up to make this Joy Dare more official.  Because, really, is there a better way to start my week?

Will you join me, friends?  As Ann says, "God asks us to give thanks in all things, because He knows the feeling of joy begins in the action of thanksgiving."

Starting over at one and counting to 1000...

Project 52: Resolution

Project 52, Week 1: Resolution

After blogging about my one word for the year, it shouldn't have surprised me that I opened up one of my favorite blogs to find this Joy Dare of counting 1000 gifts this year.  And yet, it still amazes me how God has been reassuring me that this is what He wants me to know this year - that joy doesn't come in an easy, pain-free, without trouble life.  It comes from remembering that He has already done great things for me and in knowing that He will carry me through whatever life brings my way and use it to grow me into a woman of faith who is made perfect and complete, lacking nothing.  Oh, believe me, I needed this reminder...and I know I will need it over and over and over.

(The notebook I'm using in this picture to record my gifts was created at Paper Coterie.  Right now they're offering a FREE $30 code which means you could get TWO of these beautiful notebooks and only pay shipping!)

Linking up with Darcy of My 3 Boybarians for one photo each week for a year.

The Hard Eucharisteo

As my dad walks in the door, I see his smile fading.  His shoulders slump and his words tell us it is getting worse.

My sweet grandma, always so good with words, who always has an open smile in photos because she loves to share her stories, is understanding our words but unable to form her own words.

Seizures, Alzheimers, mini strokes...the doctors explain...and in just a few words are hope is deferred.

I share my heart with a sweet friend who loves on me with her prayers and her heart that knows me so well.  We remember how, even in the storms, God is faithful.

He has prepared us so graciously for the hard moments, reminding us that eucharisteo, a life of giving thanks and counting our blessings, is not always easy, but still possible.

The soothing aroma of lavendar and a warm bath invites me to sink in and wash away the pain and the hurt and the tears.  I soak it in until the water cools down, slowly willing myself to return to the moments that I wish I didn't have to endure.

My husband sits in bed with our two beautiful children cuddled up close to their daddy.  His eyes lock with mine as I walk in and he knows I am hurting.  He invites me to join this circle, the one formed by love and held together by the One who has blessed us more than we deserve.

My daughter leans over her daddy and reaches her arm out to me.  Her eyes search my ownand somehow, at only three, she really sees me.  I kiss her and she smiles, a smile that says, "I know you're sad, mommy, but I love you."

And I remember Ann's words, that sometimes the moments that are hard are better than the moments that are easy, because they remind us of grace and that in our deepest pain, we get grace enough to bear it - when we run into the arms of Grace who bore it all, into Him who is more than enough.

I wonder at how God has prepared me for a time when I would again have to praise Him not for the good things, but for His love that is goodness enough.

Even in this storm, I will trust in the One who holds my tomorrows and praise Him for grace enough to bear it and for Him who is more than enough.

To you, O LORD, I call; my rock, be not deaf to me, lest, if you be silent to me, I become like those who go down to the pit.
Hear the voice of my pleas for mercy, when I cry to you for help, when I lift up my hands toward your most holy sanctuary...
Blessed be the LORD! For he has heard the voice of my pleas for mercy.
The LORD is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him.
(Psalm 28:1-2, 6-7)

30 Days of Thanks

Every day this month, I've been purposely recording my thankfulness.  I had begun to record my 1000 gifts over the summer after reading Ann's beautiful book, but I kept forgetting and letting the busy-ness of life get in the way.  This month, I decided it was the perfect time to remember how to give thanks, because joy is found when we focus on the blessings amidst the trials and tribulations of life.  And I wanted to share them here as a permanent record of the blessings He has given me.

Day 1: Today I am thankful for quiet mornings and Starbucks coffee.

Day 2: The pitter patter of rain on the windows while I cuddle up in my hubby's arms in our warm bed.  Sleeping in on a Wednesday morning and enjoying breakfast with my two sweet babies.

Day 3: For my biggest cheerleader, my constant companion, my unconditional lover, my best and truest friend, the man I said "I do" to 5 years ago...and every single day of my life since then.

For the three sweet women who have formed a "sisterhood" of support and encouragement through our similar struggles, for the family I am so blessed to be loved by no matter how much of a mess I am, for many sweet sister-friends and prayer warriors who have loved on me, prayed for me, and carried me through many a dark day.  I thank God in all my remembrances of YOU and always pray with joy for YOU.

Another thing to be thankful for today: early dismissal for me so I can take my little ones home at lunch time and take a nap with them.

A sleeping blue eyed baby boy on my shoulder - could anything be sweeter?

Day 4: Doctors and medicine who helped me through many illnesses, surgeries, and other health problems.  I probably wouldn't be here today without the amazing medical team at Children's Hospital, Milwaukee.  And I'm so thankful for my regular doctor who knows me and truly cares about me, always helping me find the best solutions for my ongoing health problems.

Day 5: An entire day of scrapbooking creativity with some sweet ladies today...and a hubby who was so sweet to let me have the day off.

Day 6: Church family who loves, encourages, and is always there for us.  Sermons that convict and encourage me.  Two pastors who lead our church with wisdom and love, always seeking to serve and walk in the Lord.

Day 7: The sweetest little "classroom helpers" and friends who take care of my little ones while I'm teaching.

Day 8: Two sweet sisters, Melissa and Kelly, who always know what to say to put a smile on my face, encourage me when I am feeling sad, and love me no matter how much of a mess I am and for two sweet brothers, DJ and Daniel, who give me the biggest hugs and never forget to say I love you.  I am truly blessed.

Day 9: The comfort of a hug, a coffee date with a sweet friend, and the beauty of Galatians 6:9 when we gather together in prayer to bear one another's burdens.

My daughter learned how to say "I love you" and it completely melted my heart. I've been waiting for the day she would say it to me and it couldn't have come at a better time.

Day 10: Three sweet women who share a sisterhood of understanding, unconditional love, and constant communication.  They understand me like no one else does, because they know exactly the burdens I have carried.

Day 11: Freedoms we enjoy every day won by men and women who serve our country and their families who sacrifice much daily and the freedom that can only be found in Christ.

Last night, my little man climbed up on my lap, looked me in the eyes, and said "I love you".  So as not to be outdone, my daughter leaned over to give me a kiss and said "I love you".  Melt my heart.

Day 12: Parents who are always willing to lend a helping hand (especially when it involves their grandbabies ;) and whose commitment to each other and the vows they made in marriage is the best example to us of what a marriage should be.

It turned out to be a wonderful, beautiful day!  I completed my first ever running race - a 3 mile prediction run (I may have walked most of it and finished last, but I FINISHED!).  My parents came to cheer us on along with our little ones who were excited to say "Go daddy!" and "Go mommy!".  Then we enjoyed lunch with my brother, Daniel, for family day at Lakeland and a beautiful walk around campus.

Day 13: Homemade gluten free bread, gluten free cereal, and vanilla flavored coconut milk.  A tummy that is slowly healing on a gluten free, dairy free diet.

Day 14: Listening to a beautiful barbershop quartet sing praises to our King last night and being part of such a sweet church family.

Day 15: My engagement/wedding ring found after a frantic search last night with no results...only to be found this morning when my daughter told me it was by "eebees" (aka: videos).  For the memory of the night my husband first told me he loved me...and asked for my hand in marriage.  I've never once doubted saying "YES!".

Enjoying a spontaneous family night tonight watching a Netflix movie and cuddling up on the couch with my three favorite people.

Day 16: Insurance to help pay for all my medications and doctor visits.  Medications that help control my asthma, allergies, and anxiety.

Day 17:  Green tea to soothe my sore throat, sweet melody of music in the background from Ann's blog, and His mercies that never end.

Day 18:  Gluten free all purpose flour and the smell of homemade chocolate chip cookies and banana bread baking in the oven.  One last box of fresh winter produce from our produce share.  Waking up with my sweet son cuddled up next to me in bed.

Two more days of subbing and then back to the world of a stay at home mom again.  I will miss teaching, but I am SO looking forward to being home with my little ones again.

Day 19:  Sleeping in on a Saturday morning and waking up to our little ones climbing in bed with us.  Looking forward to spending the day visiting with my sister.

Day 20:  Starbucks coffee for a morning drive.  A full night of rest and memories of a fun scrapbooking day yesterday.  Spending time sharing my heart with my best friend, my hubby, before falling asleep in his arms.

Day 21:  A lazy Sunday afternoon with a little bit of house cleaning (a clean house makes me happy :) and a 25 pound, hard earned weight loss.  (And the fact that I didn't just lose it - I'm NEVER planning on "finding" it again!)

One more day of substitute teaching and then a mini-vacation back "home" with my family.  Packing up the van tonight so we can leave right away after school tomorrow.  I can hardly wait!

Day 22:  Six weeks of substitute teaching at a school I love and feel privileged to work at and looking forward to a mini-vacation back home with my family.

Day 23:  A great grandma who still knows who I am and loves when we come to visit.  Being "home" with my family for Thanksgiving.  Running with my brother in the Santa Scamper last night.

Day 24:  Not being able to eat the traditional Thanksgiving dishes...because it means I won't overeat and my tummy won't hurt.  Two kids who fight nap...because it means they can think and understand and speak and hear.  Being up early on a holiday...because it means I can enjoy some quiet time by myself before a busy day.

Counting my blessings today: still having grandma here with us, a hubby who's willing to help out and love on my grandma just as much as any one of us,  foods that are gluten free and dairy free that I can eat, iphones when the internet stops working, hearing my daughter say "I miss you" and "I love you", cuddling with my little man, knowing my hubby safely arrived after a 50 mile bike ride to my parents' house last night, crockpots a plenty to keep our food warm, my husband's job that is stable and provides us with more than enough, watching the Packer game with my family, and so, so much more.  God is good!

Day 25:  My wonderful extended family and spending precious time together on Thanksgiving day.  My hubby who has been intentional about telling me he loves me and is always my biggest cheerleader.  Gluten free pancake mixes so I can still enjoy a yummy breakfast with my family.  Black Friday shopping deals online so I don't have to brave the crazy crowds. Iphones and mifi so we can still have internet access at my parents' house when the internet service messed up and canceled it.

Day 26:  Shopping with my brothers and sister, a fun family photo shoot in the rain with our awesome photographer, and finally running a 12 minute mile.

Day 27:  A restful night of sleep in our own bed, time spent with my hubby after the little ones were in bed, and a quiet Sunday morning.

Day 28:  A quiet early morning run and how much I enjoy running, bath tub fizzes to lure my fearful-of-water son to take a bath, staying HOME with my babies today, memories of my grandpa (post heart attack and bypass surgery) chasing my kids around the house on Thanksgiving day, and stepping on the scale to discover another pound of weight loss towards my goal.

Day 29:  Dancing with my kids in the living room to Christmas music together, running 2 miles this morning and loving it, Christmas cards complete and ordered (and the beautiful family photos we have to display on them), reading Genesis 1 to my daughter and hearing the faith of a child understand that God made all things.

Day 30: An almost four hour nap yesterday afternoon, family night last night, a new cell phone charger, kids who once again love bath time, and a lazy Wednesday morning.

Bigger Picture Moments: The First Thanksgiving

The last few days before Thanksgiving break, I incorporated some fun Thanksgiving related lessons in the classroom I was subbing in.

It got me thinking about the first thanksgiving and what it was really all about.

Because, today, when I go visit family, we will count our blessings and feast on turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, and pumpkin pie.  But, I wonder if the meaning of thanksgiving - why it was celebrated to begin with - has gotten lost over the years.

The Pilgrims came to this new land after suffering persecution for their disagreements with the Church of England.
"They knew they were pilgrims, and looked not much on those things, but lifted up their eyes to the heavens, their dearest country."  (William Bradford)
They came for religious freedom, but that first winter was both long and hard.  Many died from lack of shelter and food as well as illness. Only 53 of the 100 original settlers survived that first winter.

The next year, the Pilgrims were grateful for a successful harvest and for the Wampanoag natives who helped them learn to grow crops in this new land.

To celebrate, they held a celebration meal, a way to give thanks to the Wampanoag for their help and to thank God for protecting them through the first winter and providing for the coming winter through a bountiful harvest.

"Our harvest being gotten in, our governor sent four men on fowling, that so we might after a special manner rejoice together." (Edward Winslow)

The name Thanksgiving, to the Pilgrims, actually meant a day to give thanks to God, not the elaborate feast we know today.  The first thanksgiving meal was probably called a harvest festival.  It wasn't until years later that the two celebrations were joined as one - a day to celebrate a succesful harvest with a delicious meal and a day set aside to give thanks to the One who has blessed us with so much.

So, this year, as I get ready to join my family for our traditional Thanksgiving meal, I will be thinking of that first thanksgiving, the hardships the Pilgrims endured, and the God who brought them through that first winter.

And I am thankful for the freedoms we have in this land - to worship the God who made us, to thank the God who blesses us, and to honor the God who loves us.

Because, really, thanksgiving is about giving thanks to the One who has already given us much more than we deserve.

Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth.

Worship the LORD with gladness;

come before him with joyful songs.

Know that the LORD is God.

It is he who made us, and we are his;

we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving

and his courts with praise;

give thanks to him and praise his name.

For the LORD is good and his love endures forever;

his faithfulness continues through all generations.

(Psalm 100)

Therefore, Do Not Worry

I crawled into bed after a long, busy day chasing, disciplining, cleaning, soothing.  I was exhausted.

I knew I wouldn't be able to fall asleep as my thoughts chased each other around in my mind, imagining all the worries, stresses, struggles tomorrow would bring.   So, I opened up His word and was drawn to Matthew 6:25.
Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?
I've read this verse countless times before, but something new stirred in me.  My eyes fell upon the word therefore and I remembered that therefore is a transitional word.  It means as a result, consequently, in conformity with.  Because the previous statement is true, this is the effect or result of it.

So, I read the previous verse to find out what the therefore was there for.
No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.
Because I cannot serve two masters, I should not worry.  Why?  Because worry then becomes my master and I can no longer serve the one Master who really matters.

I either serve God or worry.  I cannot worry, because when I worry I abandon the One who gives me all that I need and so much more, the One who is with me yesterday, today, and tomorrow, the One who knows the plans He has for me and will work all things together for good to those who love Him.

The best way I know to stop myself from worrying is to focus instead on the gifts God has given me...and so I continue counting grace.

Freedom & How Much It Cost

the flag still stands for freedom

"So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." (John 8:36)

Today, we celebrate Memorial Day, a day of remembering the sacrifice of so many men and women who serve our country.  We remember that the freedom we so often take for granted wasn't really free.  It cost, much.

In the same way, my freedom in Christ wasn't really free.  It cost, much.

It cost the blood of Word became flesh, God dwelling among us.  It cost blood that was meant to be my own, a death I deserved.  He took my place so I could be free, because, on my own, I am still bound by the slavery of sin, no matter how hard I try, no matter how much good I do.

The freedom we often take for granted in our country took the lives of men and women who sacrificed the day to day pleasure of home, family, friends...to serve our country in a far away land and put their lives on the line.  It took families being separated, wives and children waiting for their soldier to come home, sacrificing in their day to day lives for our freedoms.

I cannot thank these men and women enough...I cannot thank my Jesus enough.  But, still, I am grateful, forever thankful for the price that was paid for my freedom.

I'm Going to Miss This

I am sitting here trying to motivate myself finish the piles of laundry, clean up the stacks of dirty dishes, change into clothes other than pajamas, and get out and do something today...but all I can think about is how tired I am.  I've been doing so much better, but, after several busy days in a row, I have no energy left.  So, I am going to take it easy, enjoy doing nothing other than enjoying my little ones, and maybe even take a bubble bath and a nap in the afternoon.

Last week, during some sweet fellowship with some mommy friends, I was reminded that the dishes, laundry, and everyday messes will always be there...but, someday, my little ones will grow up and begin their own adventures with families of there own.  I will miss these days, so, today I am going to live in the moment, soak up the memories, and remember the gift that these days are.

And, as I continue counting to 1000 gifts, I am thankful for a God who loves me in the details of this life and has already given me way more than I deserve...
