Just Write: Peace

Photo via Instagram

Early in the morning, I slip out of our room.

The cabin is silent except for the soft sound of birds singing their morning blessings.

Bible in hand, journal propped open, pen posed for writing, I allow my fingers to do the talking, listening carefully for the still small Voice.

The sun is just beginning it's morning assent, flooding the mist covered lake with a gentle, calming light.

Good morning, Lord.

My soul whispers as I imagine His hands painting this masterpiece right before my eyes, a reminder of His promises, His steadfastness, His never ending presence.

Another day filled with grace, mercy, and a love I can't even begin to fathom.

My heart whispers thanks simply for the blessing of a new day.

And my fingers begin forming letters, words, sentences as I allow His words to penetrate my life.

Peace, like a river, or a quiet lake in the middle of God's creation, attends my soul.

Captivated by Him, I am ready to begin, a fresh start, a new beginning, a hope filled promise for the future, knowing without a doubt that it is well with my soul.

Cabin By The Lake

Last Morning

For the next week or so, this space will be silent again. I'll be soaking up the time with my three loves in a cabin by the lake...a much needed time for rest and refreshment for all of us. It's so hard to believe this will be the last time we go on vacation as a family of four. In about nine weeks, we will be gazing into the sweet little face of our littlest peanut...and we'll be wondering how we ever did life without him here.

Northland Family Camp

I know it's been a while since we returned from Family Camp, but I just had to share some of the photos from our week up at Northland Baptist Bible College. It is a beautiful campus and it was such a wonderfully refreshing week for our family. Every day, after breakfast, the kids got to go to their own classes while Ted and I enjoyed morning service and sessions. We listened to some wonderful preaching and beautiful singing and were blessed to have some time to spend alone, just the two of us, reading our bible together, praying together, and just talking. One of the nights we even had a date night where childcare was provided and we got to have dessert and coffee in the coffee shop. Every afternoon, during free time, the kids took a nap, I spent some time catching up on reading, and Ted went mountain biking on the many trails there. The kids slept wonderfully the entire week too, mostly because they were exhausted from all the activity. One of the nights they had a carnival complete with balloon hats and an inflatable slide and on the last night they had a freedom celebration for the 4th of July with live music and fireworks. We are already looking forward to next year, because it was just the family vacation we needed.

This morning, Ted & David decided to go mountain biking, so they left as soon as they had their bike stuff packed up in David's car.  Lisa and Erencan had arrived in the middle of the night, so the kids were having fun exploring David's backyard for a while.  Lisa and I got a grocery list together and then took all the kids on a grocery shopping adventure.  All went well until Almanzo started gagging and the next thing I knew the cart, the floor, and my little man were covered in puke.  I stood there stunned for a moment and then quickly asked an employee for help cleaning up.  I felt so bad for the guy who had to clean it up, but all the employees were so gracious and helpful, continually making sure Almanzo was really okay.  Of course, by that time, he was charming them with his smiles.  I thought it was a fluke until he woke up from nap in the afternoon covered in puke again.  The rest of the day was a blur of cleaning up puke messes and that night none of us got much sleep.  The highlight of the evening was that Ted and I were still able to enjoy a little double dinner date with David & Cherylyn.  We went to a local pizza place they often go to and enjoyed some really good pizza and just enjoyed each other's company.  My mother in law assured me our little man would be fine while we were gone and when we arrived back at the house he was fast asleep.  I was so thankful for the little break, because it had been an exhausting day.

Almanzo woke up quite feverish and I spent the morning cuddling with him and attempting to get ready to leave for manicures/pedicures with Cherylyn and her bridesmaids and a bridal shower luncheon with the Hanes girls.  I felt terrible leaving him so sick, but I knew he was in good hands with Ted and that I could always leave early to go back to the house if I needed to.  Ted said he spent most of the day sleeping and puking up anything he ate or drank.  Poor baby was so lethargic when I got back home.  I was thankful he was still nursing, because that was the only nourishment he got all day.

Ted and I woke up not feeling very well this morning.  Almanzo was still not feeling well, so he slept most of the morning again.  I'm not sure what Ted and I had, but he was in bed all morning with a fever and I was feeling dizzy/nauseous all morning.  Thankfully, there were plenty of people around to watch Valerie while we slept.  There were people in and out of the house all day getting set up for the wedding ceremony in David's front yard.  We were all feeling much better in time for the rehearsal, but Valerie fell asleep after practicing walking down the aisle because we forgot to put her down for a nap.  Both our little ones were so exhausted after dinner that they were screaming and throwing the worst fits ever.  It took us well over an hour to get them settled down and I was a complete mess by the time they finally fell asleep.  Ted and I sat outside for a little while after I had calmed down, but were too tired to stay up for the bonfire.  That night was possible the worst night of sleep for us, because Valerie woke up covered in puke in the middle of the night and we spent the rest of the night trying to calm down her down and get Almanzo back to sleep after Valerie woke him up.

By the time I woke up to leave for my hair appointment with Cherylyn and the rest of the bridesmaids, I was exhausted.  I hadn't slept much at all and was really worried about Valerie being so sick for the day of the wedding.  I thought for sure I would fall alseep at the wheel on the way to the salon, but prayed the whole way for God to give me a peace and strength for the day.  I was thankful to get my hair done right away when I arrived so I could head back to the house to take care of Valerie.  Almanzo was back to his usual happy self, but Valerie was so, so sick.  The rest of the day was a blur of wedding pictures, the wedding ceremony, and taking care of a sick baby girl.  I had prayed all day for Valerie to be well enough for the wedding ceremony and was so thankful she made it through without puking.  The wedding itself was beautiful and we were so happy for David & Cherylyn.  The reception wasn't so exciting for us, because the moment Ted and I started enjoying our food, Valerie puked...and it was the worst episode ever.  It reminded me of our first trip to the UP when she puked all over her carseat and the car, because it was projectile vomiting that landed all over her dress, Ted's pants, Almanzo's pants, my feet, the table cloth, and the floor.  It was awful and I wanted to curl up in a corner and cry at the same time as wanting desperately to have my baby girl well again.  Needless to say, we left the reception at 8:30 and spent the rest of the night taking care of our sick baby girl.

We all slept in this morning and were thankful for a quiet day before the long trip home.  Valerie spent most of the day sleeping and Almanzo ran around playing happily.  David & Cherylyn stopped by around lunch time to pick up their wedding gifts for the gift opening and we spent a little time with them before they left.  We gave them our gift: a Simply Romantic Nights kit (from Family Life), a skillet and frying pan for the grill, and a grilling apron for David.  It was fun to see them open the gift since we couldn't go to the gift opening and we were excited to give them something they would both enjoy together.  The rest of the day, Ted and I packed our suitcases and carry ons and did a final load of wash (which mostly consisted of puke covered clothing and bed sheets).

I was anxious to get home after a long week taking care of sick kids, but was not looking forward to the long flight with two kids, especially when Valerie puked again on the way to the airport all over the rental car.  We had to stop at a gas station to clean her up and get her changed, but at least it happened before the flight.  When we finally got on the plane, both our little ones were so tired.  Almanzo fell asleep in Ted's arms and Valerie curled up in her seat next to me.  They slept really well until the captain started talking over the loud speaker to let us know it was safe to move around.  His loud voice abruptly woke them up and they were NOT happy.  The rest of the flight was spent trying to calm down two tired and crabby babies.  When the flight landed, we still had a layover in Chicago for 2 1/2 hours before another 45 minute flight home.  Most of the time was spent walking from one end of the terminal to the other and then finding a place to eat.  Valerie was still not feeling well and was especially whiny the entire time we ate dinner.  I was so thankful for Ted's calmness and patience, because I was so exhausted and couldn't even think straight all day.  The next flight was the worst 45 minutes of the entire trip.  A combination of the pressure in the plane, the exhaustion of a long day of traveling, and the uncomfortableness of still recovering from the flu resulted in the worst meltdown I have ever seen Valerie have.  She screamed, hyperventilated, kicked, hit, and flailed all over the entire flight.  There was absolutely nothing I could do except cry and pray that the flight would be over soon.  I have never been so happy to crawl into my own bed in our own home.

Our Texas Adventure , Part 1

Going on vacation when you are a mom of two toddlers is not really a vacation...it's a business trip.  I think I am still recovering.  Needless to say, it was exhausting, but it was filled with memories we will never forget.  And, because my memory has gotten worse since I became a mom, I figured I better blog about it before I forget.

Day 1: Friday, February 25th
Today, my hubby turned 30.  It was probably not his favorite birthday though, because he was still getting over a nasty cold.  Seriously, I've never seen him so sick with a cold before.  He even came home early from work one day and slept the rest of the day, only waking up for dinner.  We woke up this morning and packed up to leave by 9 am so we could stop for lunch and pick up my cousin at work so she could drop us off at the airport.  Poor Ted had to take a nap before we even left and, while our little ones played in the play area at the airport, he sat in a chair and closed his eyes.  I was fighting off a bit of a cold too, but, thankfully, it wasn't as bad as it could have been before my sinus surgery.  The first few hours of the flight went really well.  I sat with Almanzo on my lap and Ted and Valerie sat in the seats behind us.  I packed plenty of toys and snacks to keep them entertained, but eventually they were both so tired because it was way past nap time.  The last part of the plane ride was not what I would ever call fun, because the kids were crying and whining and refusing to nap.  Finally, I handed Almanzo to Ted and the kids quieted down when they could play with each other.  When the plane started to descend, however, we all started to notice the pressure in our ears.  Since my head was congested, the pressure got so bad I thought I was going to pass out.  By the time we landed, I was in tears and couldn't hear at all our of my right ear.  My ear finally popped when I blew really hard while holding onto my nose, but it hurt a lot for the rest of the weekend.

2-25-11 024

Dave met us at the airport and we loaded all our stuff plus the kids and I in his car while Ted took the shuttle to the rental car place.  After Ted got the rental car, Dave led the way to the house where the bachelorette party for Cherylyn was starting.  When we arrived, I was so nervous I thought I was going to puke.  I didn't know anyone at the party except Cherylyn and it had been a long time since I'd seen her in person.  Ted knocked on the door a few minutes after I arrived because he forgot something in the rental car and I ran out to open it for him.  He prayed with me and reassured me it would be okay.  I felt a little better, but didn't finally relax until we got to dinner and I started talking with Cherylyn and her friends.  In the end, I had a great time getting to know some of Cherylyn's friends and enjoyed a delicious dinner too.  Two of her friends dropped me back off at the rental car after dinner and I drove the rental car to Dave's house.  I didn't get there until almost midnight and was a little freaked out when I saw a raccoon run across his driveway, but thankfully I made it safely and slept well the rest of the night.

Day 2: Saturday, February 26th

I was thankful the kids both slept through the night, because I was exhausted after a busy day of traveling the day before.  After eating breakfast, I made a list and headed to the nearest grocery store to stock up on food for the next few days until my mother in law arrived.  Then, we packed up our rental car and Dave's car for the bike race on Sunday.  It was about a 2 1/2 hour drive, so we decided to go there on Saturday so they could pre-ride the course and then we stayed at a hotel for the night.  The kids and I slept for half of the ride there, so I was feeling really well rested by the time we arrived at the race course.  While Ted and Dave pre-rode the course, the kids and I walked around and played.  It felt SO good to be outside in sandals, shorts, and a t-shirt in February with the sun shining down on us. When Ted and Dave were finished pre-riding the course, we headed to the hotel and reheated the chicken and rice dinner I had made earlier.  By about 9, the kids were getting tired, so we all got ready for bed.  Dave had brought his cot, so we set it up between the two double beds for Valerie to sleep on while Almanzo slept in the pack n play.  The sleeping arrangement worked out really well, because Ted could reach over and comfort Valerie if she woke up and she felt safe enough to sleep well all night.  Almanzo, however, didn't want to stay in his bed all night.  He ended up in our bed several times and then was wide awake before 7.

Day 3: Sunday, February 27th
After eating breakfast and packing everything up for race day, we headed back to the race course.  While Ted and Dave did a warm up ride before the race, the kids and I found a fun tree swing to play in.  When the race started, we found a shady spot in the "feed zone" to sit and wait for water bottle hand ups.  Valerie was really excited when she saw Ted come racing around and starting yelling "Ted!" (because no matter how much we correct her she still calls him "Ted").  Sometime during the second lap, Dave walked over to us carrying his bike.  He was disappointed to not finish the race, because his bike broke.  I asked him how Ted was doing and he said, "Not good."  Poor Ted was still not feeling well, but managed to still finish the race.  Not quite the race day adventure we were hoping for, but we still enjoyed being there and experiencing a Texas mountain bike race on a real live ranch.

2-27-11 010

2-27-11 017

After the race, we drove for about an hour before stopping for dinner at a Mexican restaurant (because you can't go to Texas without eating Mexican food!).  When we finally got back to Dave's house, Cherylyn joined us for dessert and champagne.  We enjoyed a little movie date watching Iron Man after the kids had gone to bed.  It was fun to have some time to spend together with Dave and Cherylyn before the chaos of all the wedding festivities began.

Day 4: Monday, February 28th

Today, we drove into San Antonio to help Cherylyn with a bunch of pre-wedding stuff.  Ted, Dave, and Valerie took Dave's car to their church where Cherylyn works to load up with tables and chairs for the rehearsal dinner while Almanzo and I took our rental car to the grocery store to pick up a few things for the rehearsal dinner meal.  We all met up at the church and then drove over to the gym where Cherylyn works.  While they loaded up with a few more things, the kids enjoyed running around in the gym.  Next, we went to Cherylyn's apartment to pack up her couch and a bunch of her kitchen supplies.  Once everything was loaded up, we stopped for lunch at Which Wich (a delicious little sandwich shop) before heading back to Dave's house.  Cherylyn had to finish up a few errands, but joined the kids and I in the evening while she was babysitting her nephew and the guys headed over to Dave's bachelor party for the evening.

Day 5: Tuesday, March 1st

Today, we decided to go over to the gym where Cherylyn works so the kids could run around and play during their preschool play time.  They had a blast and I visited with Cherylyn a little bit while Ted played with them and Dave ran a quick errand.  For lunch, we ate some leftovers from the weekend and then headed to the zoo while Cherylyn finished up her last day of work before the wedding.  The kids loved seeing all the animals at the zoo.  It was so fun to see Valerie's reactions, because she's been learning all about animal names and sounds lately.  She especially loved walking around with her uncle Dave and even riding on his shoulders for a little while.  After a while, Almanzo was so tired and crabby we decided it was time to leave.  The kids fell asleep almost instantly when we got then buckled into their car seats again and we enjoyed a quiet drive back to Dave's house.  That night, Cherylyn came over again after work and visited for a little while before leaving with Dave to go pick up his family from the train station.
