Child Training Bible Review & Giveaway

Several months ago I discovered Pinterest.  I wasn't sure I would like it, but now I'm definitely hooked.  I love being able to save links all in one place and having a visual to find the links later makes it so much easier to actually use the ideas I've found.  One pin I came across was for a Child Training Bible.  I was so intrigued by it that I searched for more information and discovered their website and facebook page.

As a young mom, I often find myself struggling to know the best way to discipline and raise up these little ones in the way they should go.  Sure, I have plenty of women who have gone before me offering advice and wisdom, but, ultimately, my husband and I have to make the decisions that are best for our family.  One night I said to my husband, "I wish there was a manual for parenting" and, without missing a beat, he replied, "There is; it's called the bible".

My husband and I know that our children are a gift from God and that it is our responsibility to teach them to know and love Him so that when they are grown they will not walk away from Him.  But sometimes it's hard to know where to begin when searching his Word.  The more I read about the Child Training Bible, the more I thought, "We really need one for OUR home!".  So, I decided to contact the company asking if they'd be willing to offer a review and possibly a giveaway as well on my blog.

They were more than happy to do both and sent it out right away.  I finally got around to putting it together this week.  The Child Training Bible kit comes with four laminated cards and an instruction sheet, but requires a bible, highlighters, post it notes, and time to put it together.  I decided to use my NIV bible from college, because I most often use my ESV study bible for my own devotions and I knew the NIV is written in a way that is easier for our kids to understand.

I wish the kit came with at least the post it notes, because it took me a while to round up the right colors needed for it.  I didn't want to go out and purchase them, so I scrounged through my totes of scrapbooking and school supplies in the basement.  I didn't find blue post its, but I just used some white post its and colored them with the highlighter and crayon used for the light blue and dark blue verses.

When I explained the kit to my husband, he said he thought it seemed more time consuming than it was worth.  As I put it together, however, I began to see how important it was for me to actually see the process instead of having it all put together to begin with.  It may have taken all morning, but I found myself soaking up and being encouraged by the Words He has given us.  The highlighters and tabs are for categorizing verses from verses about disobedience to discouragement and, while it is meant as a parenting tool, I found it was just as useful for me in my own walk.

As a visual learner, I also found the color coding and tabs to be very helpful for me.  I've already used it a few times to find Ephesians 6:1 for the kids to memorize and soaked up the verses about discouragement and fear for myself.  My kids are very curious about it too and, as they grow I look forward to showing them how to use the tabs to look up verses on their own.
